A few questions. Why is PSU #8 in the BCS standings if we're #6 in the USA Today and Harris Polls, and #7 in the computers. Furthermore, why are we ranked so low in the computers when we have 3 Top 25 wins (OSU, OSU, MSU)? I believe Florida only has 1 Top 25 win. I understand the human polls putting them so high because they look good, but I don't understand the computers.

Yeah, and I don't understand how USC is ranked higher than us. Consider:
1. We have beaten more top 25 teams than USC has.
2. Similar to USC, our only loss was on the road, but it was by a smaller margin.
3. USC's loss was to a team that we beat by 31 points.
4. We beat Ohio State on the road, with pryor and wells playing.
Moreover, consider this: If Oregon State wins out and there are some important losses in the Big 12/SEC, USC could end up playing for the national championship but not qualify for a Rose Bowl berth. Does this make ANY sense at all?

Honestly, I think schools like USC, Ohio State, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. are media darlings. Programs like Penn State don't get the same media attention that these schools do. Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit coached/played for other Big 10 schools - it seems natural to think that they would be biased against Penn State due to their previous affiliations/alumni status (Corso played at Florida State). Until Penn State can beat Ohio State by a wide margin year-after-year, we won't achieve that status. I think a good start would be if USC can somehow make it to the Rose Bowl against us and get obliterated by us. If we can soundly beat them in Southern Cal, I think we'll have a step in the right direction. Especially if USC can climb as high as #3 in the BCS polls first.

Dave, I like your points - this all frustrates me to no end. I'm still rooting for the next-to-impossible scenario where PSU falls back into the national championship game - BUT, the way the BCS rankings are now after we did what we needed to do and KILLED a Top 25 team, I don't know if it's even possible. Texas Tech doesn't belong ahead of us after getting embarassed like that.

There are so many ways to look at it, and each way makes it seem like PSU is getting the shaft more.

Of Alabama, Florida, Texas, TTU, Oklamhoma and USC the only team to win a road game against a ranked opponent is Alabama (vs an overrated Georgia team). Florida and Texas won at neutral sites, but that hardly compares to PSU winning at the 'shoe against the #9 team.

If Penn State is knocked for a weak OOC schedule...look at the schedules for any of the Big 12 teams. The only decent game was OK hosting TCU.

Iowa and Ole Miss have comparable records, yet Florida gets a pass despite losing at home while PSU lost on the road (to an underrated Iowa team whose only losses are heartbreakers).

If playing in the big ten is costing us, then why is PSU the lowest ranked 1 loss team while OSU is the highest ranked 2 loss team? Does getting blown out by USC get OSU credit or something?

The big ten is perceived as weak because of OSU losing the way the did in recent big bowl games. Nobody considers OK has had similar letdowns in recent years, as had NE.

Missouri is ranked #12 after beating who? Illinois? a team that is way down the rankings in the big 10? Now all the Big 12 schools get credit for beating a highly ranked team that isn't very good, thus inflating their computer rankings.

Simply compare USC and PSU. PSU crushed OSU and won on the road at tOSU. USC lost to OSU and beat the tOSU at home when they were missing two key offensive players. The rest of the schedules are comparable, if not favoring PSU. Yet, PSU is behind USC.

I just hope the Big 10 dominates in bowl games so the media's love affair with the B12 and SEC ends.

(And by the way...PSU is #8 in the computers, thus why they are #8 in the BCS since the human polls are pretty close).

Another note: there is the potential in the Pac10, SEC, and B12 for a non conference champion to still be in the national championship game. If you can't even win your conference there is NO WAY you should be playing for the title.

m_royer, PSU is #7 in the computers (unless ESPN's rankings are wrong). They're #6 in the two human polls and #7 in the computers - which confuses me.

All of your points are exactly why I get so frustrated.

I don't see anywhere on ESPN where the computer rankings are listed. FOX lists them here: http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/polls

We are #8 in the BCS rankings and the computer rankings average.

Each individual computer score can be linked from here: http://www.bcsfootball.org/bcsfb/rankings

That #8 is under the "Prev" section - we were previously #8. I don't know why they don't show this week's Computer Ranking on that site. Strange.

On ESPN, if you go to the rankings page and find the BCS Rankings in the drop-down list it shows the Computer rankings as well. Use this link - http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/BCSStandings .

I fully agree with everyone, I flipped out yesterday when I saw we were 8th. Even though the National Championship would still be a stretch if we were 6th or so it still pissed me off. On another note..you know Joe must have been hurtin real good if he had surgery on Sunday morning.

If anyone wants to get more adrenaline flowing, check out this article from Bill Plaschke about poor old USC:

http://www.latimes.com/sports/columnists/la-sp-plaschke21-2008nov21,0,4560148.column

To pull out one quote "They need to play somewhere that could persuade next year's voters to give them a strong preseason ranking and early benefit of the doubt."

Apparently a top 3 ranking in the preseason polls from the last 5 years isn't good enough.

PRAY FOR OREGON SO WE CAN KICK SOME TROJAN ASS.

m_royer...that really pissed me off. That article was obviously a slap in the face, but I feel like he's just trying to get a big reaction by writing it.

I'm very conflicted about the Oregon-Oregon State game. While I don't want to wind up playing OSU in the Rose Bowl, I still hang on to hope for the National Championship game and want OSU to win for that reason. We need their win to help our SOS and # of Top 25 wins.

Oregon won! Pray that USC doesn't get upset by UCLA (yeah, right) then we can beat the trojans in the Rose!

Let's go State!
