LIONS RISE TO #3 IN BOTH POLLS

Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel might have some company in the category of coaches who are perceived to struggle in big games. The sweater-vested one had a great start to his career, winning BCS Bowl Games in three of his first five seasons in Columbus and has beaten the rival Michigan Wolverines in six of seven matchups. But after looking bad in two straight BCS Championship Games and getting throttled by USC this season, Tressel has drawn some criticism.

Likewise, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops has suffered a rather precipitous fall from the prestige he once enjoyed. Stoops took the reins of the Sooner Schooner in 1999 after five straight non-winning seasons in Norman. Almost immediately, he restored the once-proud program to prominence by winning a national title in his second season on the job. Stoops' teams defeated Texas five straight times from 2000 - 2005 by an average score of 38-10, and he won three of his first four bowl games, including two BCS games. Recently however, it's been a different story for Stoops' Sooners.

Oklahoma lost back-to-back National Championship Games in 2003 and 2004 to LSU and USC and lost consecutive Fiesta Bowls to Boise State and West Virginia. Stoops has also been defeated by Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns in three of the last four Red River Shootouts (political correctness be damned), including a 45-35 loss on Saturday when the Sooners were undefeated and ranked number one.

The upset in Dallas was just one of a number of surprises on Saturday that has allowed Penn State to move all the way up to #3 in both major polls. Here's a look at the new Top Tens.

COACHES POLL (First Place Votes)
1. Texas (44)
2. Alabama (14)
3. Penn State (3)
4. USC
5. Texas Tech
6. Oklahoma
7. Florida
8. BYU
9. Georgia
10. Oklahoma State

AP POLL (First Place Votes)
1. Texas (39)
2. Alabama (26)
3. Penn State
4. Oklahoma
5. Florida
6. USC
7. Texas Tech
8. Oklahoma State
9. BYU
10. Georgia

The Coaches Poll includes Ohio State at #11, Michigan State at #17 and Minnesota at #27 with Wisconsin and Northwestern dropping out after losing on Saturday. The AP Poll is similar with Ohio State at #12, Michigan State at #20 and Minnesota at #28.

The biggest benefactor of the weekend's upsets was Florida, who moved up seven spots after smashing LSU at home. I think the Gators were lucky to get LSU when it was still undefeated because that is not the same team that won the national title last season and will probably finish the regular season with at least three losses.

The season's first BCS Ranking will come out next Monday and could feature yet another shake-up at the top as Texas will face a tough challenge when it defends its top ranking against Missouri in Austin.
